Lighting Surveys

Lighting surveys are an important part of occupational health and safety. Ensuring adequate lighting is in place to support the work being carried out is crucial, as is emergency lighting in the event of a power outage or other workplace incident.

When reviewing lighting systems in your workplace, you need to consider if there is enough light provided to support the tasks being carried out, that the lighting provided creates a safe and comfortable work environment, that the safety of workers is a priority by ensuring hazards are visibly lit and that lighting supports changes in work activities and environment, i.e., varying shift times.

In general, lighting in the workplace should be evenly distributed and of adequate brightness. The lack of lighting in any workplace can lead to a number of safety issues and concerns for workers and anyone else on site.

Complete Envirotest technicians will perform thorough lighting surveys, providing you with details of any defects in the lighting systems throughout your workplace.

Issues that may present as a result of your lighting systems include:

  • glare issues

  • eye fatigue

  • reflective issues

Your basic lighting requirements include:

  • 160lux for general work areas

  • A range between 320-400lux should be used for office environments with moderate to difficult visual tasks

Please note, these levels are only considered as minimum values when designing any lighting system.

Complete Envirotest has extensive experience working with mines and workshops to conduct light surveys. We can also assist with the lighting level design of workspaces to ensure regulatory requirements are met and that ultimately, a safe environment is created for all.

Current illuminance recommendations associated with design, placement, and installation along with energy requirements for building structures can be found on AS/NZS 1680 Interior lighting-industrial tasks and processes.
